How can Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) possibly be beneficial to those with Hepatitis or liver disease?

AHCC may be beneficial to those with Hepatitis by stimulating the immune system and allowing it to more efficiently fight Hepatitis as well as helping protect against liver cancer.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health, National Library of Medicine Pub Med Website (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=3Dpubmed) includes many clinical studies and articles demonstrating that AHCC can be effective in stimulating and enhancing the natural defense mechanisms of the body. I have included the PUBMed ID of these Clinical Studies along with the beneficial effects of AHCC in those articles below:

1. Antioxidant effects and protection against disorders induced by oxidative stress particularly in the liver and kidney
(PMID: 14623030)
2. Enhanced resistance against fungal, bacterial, and viral infections
(PMID: 12748595 & 12692142 & 19141700 & 19285605)
3. Increased dendritic immune cell number and function, in healthy humans
(PMID: 18791928)
4. Potential immunoceuticals that exhibit anticancer activity in vitro or in animal models
(PMID: 10696116 & 11980361 & 16362410)
5. Ameliorate cisplatin-evoked toxicity as well as the chemotherapeutic side effects in cisplatin-treated mice.
(PMID: 17555784)
6. Improved prognosis of postoperative and/or advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) liver cancer patients.
(PMID: 12076865 & 16913187)

AHCC's effects on the immune system were first recognized in the late 1980's at Tokyo University. Since that time, research has been published indicating that AHCC stimulates the production of NK cells, killer T-cells, and cytokines (interferon, IL-12, TNF-alpha). AHCC may be beneficial to those with Hepatitis by stimulating the immune system to more efficiently fight Hepatitis as well as helping protect against liver cancer.

AHCC - What is it, how does it work, where to get it, side effects:

What is AHCC?

Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) is a nutritional food supplement developed from the mycelia of several species of Basidiomycete mushrooms including the shiitake. AHCC is rich in polysaccharides, amino acids, minerals and fiber.
In Japan, many consider these mushrooms to be herbal medicines. In vitro experiments have shown that AHCC enhances natural killer cell activity and is thereby effective in stimulating and enhancing the natural defense mechanisms of the body. AHCC is the world’s most researched specialty immune supplement with over 80 supporting research studies.

How does AHCC work?

The mechanism of action is not completely known. In short- It appears to boost the body’s immune system as well as provide antioxidant protection and possibly regulate nitric oxide production.
The longer version: One animal study suggested that AHCC has antioxidant effects and may protect against disorders induced by oxidative stress. Animal studies have also shown AHCC to enhance resistance to bacterial infection by improving T-cell response, increasing inflammatory cytokine and chemokine expression as well as lymphocytes. In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cirrhosis, treatment with AHCC has shown beneficial effects on liver function, possibly by regulating nitric oxide (NO) production. AHCC has been shown to enhance natural killer (NK) cell activity in vitro and induces endogenous IL-12 in mice. The PubMed Ids of these studies are listed above.

How can I obtain AHCC and what will it cost?

AHCC is manufactured by Amino Up Chemical Company in Sapporo, Japan and is distributed in the United States by Maypro Industries. Maypro sells AHCC to a number of leading supplement companies including Quality of Life Laboratories, a subsidiary of Maypro.
It can be obtained through many supplement supplies for around $40+ for 60 Vcaps of 500mg.

What dosage and frequency should I take?

The manufacturer recommends a dosage of two capsules daily before a meal as a dietary supplement, and two capsules three times daily before each meal for additional immune system support.

Are there any side effects or cautionary warnings?

AHCC is safe and non-toxic. Adverse effects of nausea, diarrhea, bloating, headache, fatigue, and foot cramps occurred in 20% of subjects but were mild and transient (PMID: 18202543).
It is often used in combination with chemotherapy treatments in Japan to reduce the adverse side effects of those treatments with positive results observed in many patients. IMPORTANT: AHCC can induce CYP450 2D6. This may decrease the activity of drugs such asdoxorubicin or ondansetron, which are substrates of this enzyme (PMID: 19087767). However, the overall data suggest that AHCC would be safe to administer with most other chemotherapy agents that are not metabolized via the CYP450 2D6 pathway. PLEASE DO consult with your doctor before adding AHCC to your protocol.
